- Avalon Travel Publishing was formed a few years ago as a merger of the companies Moon Travel Handbooks, Foghorn Press, and from John Muir Publishing, the Rick Steves, Travel Smart, and City Smart series. At this site, you can explore the titles of all of these companies as well as linking to a wealth of other travel information. The underlined companies also have their own individual sites.

- Chronicle Books, based in San Francisco, publishes travel titles about California, plus an eclectic group of individual guidebook titles and series, including the bestselling Cheap Eats/Cheap Sleeps series for the cities of Paris, Rome, London, and Prague.

Publishers -D-
- Dorling Kindersley, published in Great Britain, is best known for its Eyewitness Travel Guide series which covers major countries, regions, and cities throughout the world. Each guide features numerous color photographs, maps, 3-D aerial drawings, cutaways of buildings, floorplans, and much more. Their motto is "The guides that show you what others only tell you." They also publish travel planner guides, maps, and phrasebooks.

- Falcon Publishing specializes in outdoor recreation guides (hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, camping, etc.) for primarily North American locations. They also publish a series of scenic driving guides and wildlife viewing guides. Recently bought by Globe Pequot Press, they are also the distributor of guidebooks from the publishers: Insiders' Guides, TwoDot, ThreeForks, Chockstone, Sierra Press, and Waterford Press.
- Fodor Travel Publications is the largest publisher of travel guides in North America. Their famed Gold Guides are a standard by which many other guides are measured from. They also have several other outstanding series that cover worldwide locations.
- Foghorn Press, based in San Francisco, specializes in travel titles about California and trail guides to western U.S.A. locations. Excellent, well written guidebooks.
- Frommer Travel Guides (published by IDG Books Worldwide) are perhaps the most recognizable travel guides in the world due to its founder's first title, Europe on $5.00 a Day. Second only to Fodor's in terms of number of annually produced titles, they now feature hundreds of titles covering worldwide locations for travelers with all kinds of budgets, not just bargain travel.

- Gault-Millau, who originated in France 35 years ago by reviewing restaurants, have a U.S. based publishing group which offers The Best of series with titles covering France, Paris, Italy, London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and several other locations.
- Globe Pequot Press is one of the largest publishers and distributors of travel guidebooks in North America. As a publisher, they specialize in U.S. locations. As a distributor, they bring North Americans several quality titles and series from both domestic and foreign publishers, including the Bradt Guides that cover the globe (with an emphasis on third world nations), famed Cadogan Guides, one of the most popular set of guidebooks from Great Britain, Menasha Ridge Press known for its outdoor recreation guides, and most recently, Falcon Publishing and its various imprints.

- Hunter Publishing is one of the larger travel publishers in North America. They specialize in unique individual titles and series that cover worldwide locations. They also distribute titles from a handful of Great Britain-based publishers.

- Insiders' Guides, an imprint of Falcon Publishing, specializes in city guidebooks for more than 70 locations in the United States, plus several regional/thematic titles such as North Carolina's Mountains, Oregon, and Civil War Sites in the Eastern Theater.
- Interlink Publishing publishes several unique travel titles and series (Traveller's History, Traveller's Wine Guides, Cities of the Imagination) with an emphasis on Europe, Africa, and Middle East locations.

- Lake Claremont Press specializes in titles about the Chicago, Illinois area, including A Native's Guide to Chicago, Literary Chicago: A Book Lover's Tour of the Windy City, and Hollywood on Lake Michigan: 100 Years of Chicago and the Movies.
- Let's Go Guides, distributed by St. Martin's Press, are a series of 35 guidebooks written and updated annually by selected students at Harvard University with an emphasis on budget travel. They also publish a map guide series covering 18 worldwide cities.
- Lonely Planet Publications, headquartered in Australia, is one of the largest travel publishers in the world with over 200 titles. Their comprehensive and often opinionated guides cover most worldwide countries and cities. They also publishe language phrasebooks, travel atlases, and Journeys, a series of true traveller's tales.

- Moon Travel Handbooks publishes some of the most well researched travel guidebooks in the industry. No stone is left unturned. Originally specializing in Asia, Latin America, and Mexico travel locations, their titles list now includes individual guidebooks for 25 - 30 U.S. states, a few U.S. city/regional titles, five Canada regional titles, and some specialized travel subject titles.
- Mountaineers Books specializes in trail guides for hiking and mountaineering locations primarily in North America, plus titles for Asia, Latin/South America, and Europe. It also publishes several how-to guides on the above subjects and tales of true mountain adventures/expeditions.
- Mountain Press specializes in a variety of reference, history, outdoor recreation, and travel titles about western locations. A recent title is Crazy Horse: A Photographic Biography.
- Mustang Publishing publishes art, reference, and travel guides. Some of its titles include France on the TGV, Northern Italy: A Taste Of Trattoria, Paris for Free (Or Extremely Cheap, London for Free, and D.C. for Free.

- Rough Guides, headquartered in England, are one of the largest travel publishers in the world with over 200 titles covering most of the major countries and cities in the world. These guidebooks offer a good mix of choices for both budget and moderate income travelers. The Rough Guides also publishes a series of how-to travel titles (First-Time Europe), a series of language phrasebooks, several reference guides, audio CDs for worldwide types of music.

- Sasquatch Books specializes in travel guides for the Pacific Coast region, including their popular Best Places series which includes Alaska, California, Oregon Coast, and the cities of Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Diego, and San Francisco.

- Taylor Publishing publishes a number of travel guides about Texas and other North American locations such as the recent title: Retro NY: A Guide to Rediscovering Old New York.
- Ten Speed Press, known best as the publisher of the all-time bestselling job hunting guide: What Color is Your Parachute, also publishes several unique travel guides. Recent titles include The Grown-Up's Guide to Living in France, Cybercafes, Boulangerie: Pocket Guide to Paris' Famous Bakeries, The Packing Book: Secrets of the Carry-on Traveler, and The Wordless Travel Book.

- Ulysses Travel Guides headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, publishes 35 guides devoted to Canada (English and French), plus unique guides for locations in Central America, Caribbean Islands, U.S.A., Portugal, and France.

- Wilderness Press headquartered in Berkeley, California, specializes in trail and outdoor recreation guides for California and the Pacific Coastal region, plus a few titles that go beyond these boundaries. They also publish some how-to books regarding outdoor recreation topics. Some recent titles include The Pacific Crest Trail: Oregon-Washington, Boundary Waters Canoe Area: Vol. 2 (Minnesota), Mt. Shasta Book, How to Rent a Public Cabin in Southcentral Alaska, and Utah's National Parks.
- Wilson Publishing publishes three excellent hotel guides:

- Hello Spain! Spain Hotels $40-$80 A Night for Two
Each book contains a room description, prices, and all the particulars, plus directions to the hotel, recommended restaurants in each city, tips & foreign phrases for making hotel reservations, and much more.

- Zagat Publishing is renown for their hotel/restaurant guides, now with 30-some locations from San Francisco, New York, Miami to London and Paris. Highly opinionated surveys of each location that you may or disagree with.
